One of the most popular annual events that Rotary sponsors is the youth Slapshot weekend. An acronym for Student Leadership Award Program for Students High On Learning, this program is unique to Rotary District 7090. It is held every April for teenagers aged 15-18 who are already leaders in their church, community or school. 100 young people from Western New York State and Southern Ontario are chosen and sponsored by their local Rotary clubs to gather in the Canterbury Hills outside of Ancaster, Ontario.

The dual approach of physical and intellectual activities support the central idea of self-awareness and leadership. The physical aspects of sports, competition and the ever-popular high ropes course, emphasize team work, trust and self-confidence. The mental aspects are challenged through public speaking, problem solving and group dialogue. Discussion topics include bullying, peer pressure and violence. Taken as a whole, these elements will raise the attendee’s self-awareness and lead to a better understanding of the world in which they find themselves.

Due to the popularity of this program, it is advisable to apply early. One of the most stringent prerequisites is that the participants are able to attend all of the events from Friday until Sunday evening so that they can attain the full benefits of this course. To apply for the April 28-30, 2017 session, please monitor the District 7090 website at www.rotary7090.org for when registration opens.
