In 1951, The Rotary Club of Ottawa established it’s annual "Adventure in Citizenship" Program in which some 200 senior high school students, from across Canada, spend four days in Ottawa experiencing tours, lectures, discussions and social events designed to enhance their understanding and appreciation of Canadian citizenship. The Rotary Club of Welland has participated in this unique program for over 50 years by sending an area high school student.

Earlier this year, the City of Welland and Welland Rotary signed a Memorandum of Understanding whereby the City would pay for the registration costs of the program and Welland Rotary would cover the transportation costs. Each year, a representative of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) would be participant.
This year, Vani Sharma, the Chair of MYAC, travelled to Ottawa from April 29th through May 4th, along with 200 youth from across Canada. As part of their busy schedule, they toured Library and Archives Canada, learned about Canada’s 150 celebrations, listened to an Afghanistan veteran at the Canadian War Museum, visited Parliament Hill and conversed with the Clerk and Speaker of the House as well as some of the Parliamentary pages. Several motivational speakers encouraged the participants to be leaders.
The final day the group attended a Citizenship ceremony. Vani said that she enjoyed the experience. For her, it wasn’t the sites she visited, but rather the people she got to know. “Thank you to the Rotary Club of Welland and the City of Welland.
